Can I paint wood without primer?

If it’s untreated wood that you are painting, then you will probably need to apply a primer first. What also tends to happen is that the dark colour below has a tendency to show up through to the new coat of paint regardless of how you apply it. So yes, you generally do need to apply a primer first before painting wood.
